High blood pressure is also known as hypertension. If one looks one may find it abbreviated in the medical charts as htn and if you have it, you have a serious health concern to deal with.
Having this condition can pose a greater risk of having a heart attack or stroke. In addition, high blood pressure is also know to shorten ones lifespan. Controlling it might take a combination of lifestyle changes along with perscription drugs.
Most of the high blood pressure that is out there, over ninety percent, is referred to as – primary hypertension. This type of hypertension is chronic and there may not be an obvious cause. A lot of the times it seems to manifest itself in individuals who have a family history of high blood pressure. It is also more common in older adults.
The high blood pressure that doctors are refer to is called the systolic pressure. This is the pressure in your blood vessels when your heart beats.
The pressure in your blood vessels during the periods between heart beats is called the diastolic pressure. Doctors will take your age into account as they measure your blood pressure. If the pressure is too high, it could point toward hypertension.
There is a small portion of cases that become classified as secondary hypertension. These secondary cases are cases that involve blood pressure that is high, but not due to chronic hypertension. Sometimes these cases are treated by treating the cause of the high blood pressure.
Changing your lifestyle can sometimes have dramatic effects if you have secondary hypertension. You’ll have to speak with your doctor to find out which changes might be appropriate for you, but changing dietary habits, getting more exercise and reducing stress are usually important aspects to getting your high blood pressure down to an acceptable level.
If you have an illness that contributes to the high blood pressure, then treating that illness may also help lower your blood pressure, even though sometimes it may take a while before doctors can determine what the cause of the secondary hypertension is.
At this point, if you are unable to change your lifestyle to the point where it lowers your blood pressure to a healthy level, the doctor might consider putting you on medication.
In the beginning, the medication may have to be adjusted to attain the correct level of treatment. It may seem like an inconvenience to start with, but for most people who are undergoing treatment for hypertension, they are able to enjoy a higher quality of life due to the fact, they aren’t suffering the symptoms that usually go along with high blood pressure.
